The Special Needs Resources Program (SNRP) is offered through a partnership between Children’s Centre Thunder Bay and licensed childcare programs, including licensed private home childcare within the City and District of Thunder Bay. The program supports children who have special needs, or require extra support within a licensed childcare setting. Services are offered in both French and in English.
The goal of the program is to support inclusion so that every child has access to childcare in their community. The program is designed to support children with a wide range of special needs, including speech and language, developmental, physical, social, emotional, and/or behavioural issues.
Every licensed childcare program has an assigned Resource Teacher from the SNRP. These professionals provide the support needed so that every child can take part in the childcare program of his or her family’s choice. The Resource Teacher will work closely with parents to support their child. The SNRP also has Support Partners who provide enhanced staffing or intensive supports when required.
The Resource Teacher visits childcare programs on a regular basis to review children’s goals and strategies, monitor progress, and coordinate additional supports and services. They develop an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) in collaboration with parents and the childcare program, which focuses on the individual child’s strengths and needs. They share ideas and strategies to use both within the childcare setting and at home. The Resource Teacher supports the child’s transition from childcare to school, and assists with service coordination, if appropriate. They can also provide families with information about other beneficial community resources.
Referrals are accepted through licensed childcare providers, with parental consent. Parents interested in having these services provided for their child may contact their childcare provider.
